Present world (ihilok) means that this world is the ultimate truth. Positive aspects of the Charvaka PhilosophyĬharvaka ethics rests entirely on present world. He has said in sarcasm that there is no salvation except death. He claims that there is no object called a soul. The Charvaka’s were purely materialistic, they did not accept the hereafter. For example, fish food should not be left out because there are thorns in it. But, fearing that petty misery, leaving the desire for happiness is meaningless. The second principle is that no happiness is completely pure, it also includes some amount of sorrow. Their first principle is that instead of the uncertain pleasure of the future, the definite pleasure of the present should be enjoyed. The Charvaka’s have also given some clear principles regarding easement. There is a clear view of the Charvaka sect that as long as you live happily, drink and borrow, once the body is consumed, no one comes back. Almost all the remaining sects condemn pleasure and declare them undesirable. Out of the nine sects of Indian philosophy, Charvaka is the only one who stands in favor of Hedonism. All our actions which provide happiness are moral and those which provide pleasure are immoral. The simple meaning of Hedonism is that to attain happiness is moral action. The basic principle that the Charvaka sect has taken as the basis is Hedoism.
